I can hardly believe the girls started Kindergarten today!!! We're so thankful for their little school that is maybe a mile and a half down the road and seems to be an exciting and nurturing place for them to begin their academic career! (more than anything we're all thankful for the way we hope school will enrich their lives here--providing a place to meet new friends, learn from other adults and simply get out of the apartment!)

Anna was the most nervous about the prospect of school about 6 months ago when we first moved here and started visiting schools but has fully embraced the idea since. She has been gathering supplies and packing her backpack for days in anticipation!
(Last Wednesday Anna gave us a huge scare when she fell head first off the to bunk bed onto the concrete floor in their room. Thankfully she's fine and her swollen, black eye was looking much better for the first day of school!)

For Asha, going to school is all about the friends! She informed one of our teammates several weeks ago that she was going to be "really busy" talking to all the kids in her new class. Well, it turns out there's just one other boy in the class......so I guess he'll get an earful!
I was expressing some kind of anxiety this morning as we were walking out the door and Asha was the one who said to me, "Don't worry, Mom. It'll be ok." :) She was right--we all did great!

Today we left the house at 8:15 for a short walk around the block to catch an auto-rickshaw that takes us down the road to school. We made it right on time to school at 8:30!
Bonus: the auto ride provides a nice burst of addrenaline just in case you miss your morning cup of coffee!
This was the best shot we could get of the auto ride--5 of us

in the back and 3 in the front. I had kind of dreamed of being able to pay an auto driver just to take us down to road by ourselves but the morning "rush hour" is probably not a time when that's likely to happen. Oh well...Anna was very optimistic about being the zippiest vehicle on the road as we darted in and out of traffic and made great time coming and going!

We made it to school! Here we are in the girls' classroom with Ms. Syrupee. She even has a helper for a classroom of 3 kids!
The girls had a great day and can't wait to go back tomorrow!
We're so thankful for this provision!
Thank you for your prayers as we've looked forward to this day!

Oh my goodness; the girls look so grown up in their uniforms! I'm glad the "excitement" of the autorickshaw probably made it a little less emotional for you to send off the girls to school!
Asha with her backpack on cracks me up every single time.
Melinda you are such a wonderful mother. Thanks for sharing these photos and your experience!
What a big wonderful day! Now how many people had a kindergarten teacher with a sweet name that sounds like "Syrup"--too perfect. I loved clicking on the pics to see the girls up close and those darling skirts. I love Asha's haircut, and tell Anna that hers looks like it has really grown. Their innocence is such a contrast to the work--let's celebrate that!
Thanks for the pictures and stories. Without them, I was going to have to call.
This was as emotional as when we had your first day, melinda.
The girls look like they have grown up overnight. I guess starting school does that. I am very happy they had a wonderful first day - I will pray for many more great days to come. - Tina
I'm so proud of you, girls!!! I can't wait to hear all about it from both of you. You look pretty in your backpacks and school clothes.
